lumber Type
Our primary interests are in providing high-quality exotic Asian lumber. This includes several different types. However, in different cultures with different languages, there is frequently confusion about lumber types. The information below and on the specific sub-pages for each lumber type will help you to understand the different lumber types.
You should note that the best way to make sure you have correctly identified the wood that you want is to use the scientific name. Some common names are fairly precise, like TEAK. Other common wood names are used to describe several different wood types and are frequently misused. A simple search on IRONWOOD or ROSEWOOD will show you what we mean. In many places the term IRONWOOD is used to describe ANY very hard wood and the term ROSEWOOD is used to describe ANY wood with a faint pleasant odor. For this reason, although we do use a popular common name for primary identification of wood types, we also include the scientific name and several alternate common names in order to provide pinpoint accuracy in specifying the wood type.
As this is the teakmarket.com, we will start with Teak, or more precisely, True Teak. The scientific name is “Tectona Grandis Linn” or you will frequently see the short form “Tectona Grandis”. The heartwood of teak is a dark golden yellow. The color turns dark yellowish brown with exposure. It is common for teak to show variable colors and shades when freshly cut and machined but these variations mellow with exposure and age. Please click on this link for additional TEAK information.
Another popular lumber type is Padauk. The scientific name for this wood is Pterocarpus Macrocarpus. This is very hard and durable wood. The heartwood is bright yellowish red to dark brick red and it darkens to an attractive golden brown on exposure. Please click on this link for additional PADAUK information.
Pyinkado (Burmese Ironwood) is also a highly sought after type of lumber. The scientific name is Xylia Xylocarpa. The heartwood is a rich reddish brown with darker steaks. This is also a very hard wood, frequently used in flooring. The color increases in richness with exposure but does not experience the same level of change as in Teak. Click here for additional PYINKADO information.
Macka (Maka mong). The scientific name is Afzelia Xylocarpa. This tree is prized for its attractive, luxury class red wood, but not as deep as the redness in Pyinkado. It is another very hard wood. Its beauty and strength make it ideal for use in cabinetry and sculpture. Click here for additional MACKA information.
In addition to the four wood types listed above (with supporting pages) we can also provide Chin Chan (a true ironwood with specific gravity greater than 1.0) and rubberwood lumber. Chin Chan is in short supply and is very expensive. If you wish to be on our mailing list to receive information about Chin Chan when available, please send us an e-mail. Rubberwood, although not as hard as any of the wood types listed above, is a lower cost wood which, when properly treated and dried, is almost as hard as yellow birch. Click here for additional information about CHIN CHAN.
The area of Thailand/Laos/Burma/Cambodia has many more classifications of lumber available for export. However, the ones listed above are the ones for which we have developed our network of affiliates and can access immediately or on very short notice. If you are interested in a different Asian lumber type, you may send us an inquiry through the CONTACT US page. Please include the common name as you know it AND the scientific name. Frequently, common names are misapplied or simply different from one country to another. For this reason we will make inquiries into other Asians wood types only if you provide the scientific name.
