PYINKADO Information
When reading about the characteristics about these lumber types, always remember that wood is a natural product and it is subject to natural variations. The precise color and grain pattern from a pyinkado tree felled in Nan province in Thailand, may differ from the color/grain of a pyinkado tree felled in Laos. In fact, a pyinkado tree felled in Nan Province might differ, will differ from another pyinkado tree felled in the same province. As such, the characteristics must be viewed as general guidelines.
Pyinkado is also known as Mai Deng or simply Deng (literally, Mai Deng means "tree red"). The scientific name is Xylia Xylocarpa.
The heartwood is a rich reddish brown with some darker streaks. This is a very hard wood with a clear reddish tone. It is interesting that, although this is called Mai Deng (tree red) the Padauk lumber is actually a bit more reddish in color than the Mai Deng. The red color from the Mai Deng (Pyinkado) is a bit more subtle. It has been described by many as having a "luxury class" of red color. If you search the web for information on this wood you will see this term used.
Pyinkado is a very hard wood. Its specific gravity is around 0.80 and the Janka Hardness of this wood is about 2,250 for dry wood. (See our page on Technical/Shipping terms for an explanation of the hardness measures.) Due to the hardness, it is sometimes called Burmese Ironwood. It behaves well during the drying process. It does dry slowly but with very little degrade. Due to its hardness, this is a wood that is difficult to work with (cut and nail), especially when it is dry. However, the characteristics that make Pyinkado difficult to work with in the construction phase are the same characteristics that ensure durability of the project. The Janka hardness indicates that this is an excellent candidate wood for flooring projects. Because of its hardness, it is very resistant to termites.
These are the only pictures we are currently posting of the Pyinkado lumber. More pictures will be added in the future.
