Teak Art Panels
Teak doors and carved teak panels
We have recently begun to develop a new line for our customers. We acquire blank teak panels (smalls are 35cm x 45cm x 3.5cm which is about 14 inch x 22 inch x 1.375 inch). These are high quality grade A panels with a moisture content of 10% or less. We work with two different sources of teak wood for these panels.
Our primary source is fresh cut teak wood that is kiln dried to a moisture content of 9% or less. These are constructed blanks. That is, generally 3 or more lengths of teak must be glued up to form the complete panel similar to what is done in most table tops and the like.
Our second source for the art panels is antique teak taken from very old rural homes that are no longer habitible. The owners of these old homes will sell the teak (from which the house is made) to our suppliers. Our suppliers use the large supporting log timbers to get the antique teak panel. These pieces ARE NOT kiln dried as they are already air and age dried to a moisture content of 10% or less. Also, they are usually a single piece of teak, at least that is true for the smaller panels sizes. Frequently this lumber comes from old farm homes that are over 100 years old.
The hand-carved teak art panels shown on this page are not for sale to the public. These are from my personal collection (made for personal use) or made for a specific client. However, all of the panels we sell are hand-Carved and can be custom made. Send us a picture you would like to have carved and we can do it for you. Our current cadre of carvers are well equiped to carve landscapes, animals, flowers, trees and general human forms. However, they are not well suited to carving human faces. In addition, they are not well suited to carving "busy" pictures, that is, pictures and paintings with substantial details.
In addition to carving pictures provided by the clients, we are preparing an inventory of carved panels with pictures that are well suited to this medium. We are just now starting to build this inventory and the first items will be carved by the end of January 2007. They wll be shown on this website and on our sister website, TeakArtGallery.com.
Our hand-carved teak doors are very attractive products but they are more expensive to ship in small quantities thus making small quantity door purchases quite costly. However, the panels are modestly sized and each weighs around 3.5 Kilograms (for a 35cm x 45cm x 3.5cm size), As such 3 or 4 can be put together and shipped in a special UPS or FedEx box frequently at a price of $125 USD or so. If you are buying 3 panels this will add only around $40 to the cost of each panel for express delivery. Of course, they can be shipped cheaper, and slower, buy other means.
We are very pleased with these products. The panels that are 35cm x 45cm x 3.5 cm (14 inch x 18 inch x 1.375 inch) will be priced at around $200 USD each. Larger sizes will be priced higher and more difficult carvings will be priced a bit higher. This is for solid grade A teak, hand carved by skilled artisans from Northern Thailand. They can be finished in a single color stain or with accents or with some coloration. When various colors are applied this can be done in a very solid color or in an "almost" solid color with hints of the wood grain coming through, as with the roses and the leaves on the carving shown on this page. (Grade A on the exposed face, the unexposed face could be a lower grade.)
We are working hard to have a selection of panels ready soon for our customers to look at. If you wish to be placed on our mailing l ist to be notified when this stock of good is ready then please dent an email to mjgift@teakmarket with the topic "add to TeakArtGallery mailing list". We will send a notification when the first stock of pre-carved products is reasy. In addition, remember, you can send a copy of a drawing you like to us and we can provide custom carving.
On this page we are showing you some final products, carved, stained and finished. We are aosl showing you some products with the arving but with no stain and finish. Professionally appiied stain and finish and a remarkable dimension to the final product. You can see the attention to detail in the carved intermediate product for the full richness of this produce is obvious only after a high qualith stain/finish is applied.
